     Sight and Sound Music Studio


The Renaissance Centre is home to a state of the art Recording Studio. We offer safe and affordable rehearsal space for wannabe bands, as well as recording facilities for established bands and artistes.

Sight and Sound Music Workshop was set up in 1985 just after the miner’s strike, primarily to alleviate the problems of unemployment within the Dearne area, through music. Offering a cheap, friendly community recording facility and band rehearsal room, and run by volunteers on a non profit status. Sight and Sound moved premises from an inadequate old hall to a purpose built studio within the Dearne Valley Venture building, Bolton on Dearne, in 1991. Here the studio moved from strength to strength recording numerous local bands, community organisation such as the WEA, Thurnscoe and Barnburgh choirs, local school choirs and Christmas events, as well as producing compilation tapes of local bands and musicians, still run by volunteers and user members.

Our reputation for quality recording services grew and as a result more established artists began using our services, which spread into a wider network of people and areas. Sight and Sound also provided many courses, open to anyone within the community
such as, guitar lessons and basic song writing skills, BTEC diplomas in music technology and even a community radio station, all of which were fully attended and very successful, leading on to people taking up further education and careers in the music industry. Still run by unpaid volunteers the studio has gained and delivered invaluable expertises from many sources within the local Dearne area and ‘nationwide’ music industry. Solid links have been forged with other services and funding bodies, as well as local and wider UK bands/performers, providing a yet more diverse professional recording facility at a very reasonable rate with time served and fully qualified, devoted, dedicated staff, and a wealth of past customers and ever growing user base.

We have moved premises once more (Dearne Renaissance Centre), into a larger set of purpose built rooms, which we acoustically treated (professionally) and both the live room and control room look and sound very pleasing. Also we have some of the best equipment that money can buy, with extensive microphones by: Neumann, Coles, Earthworks, Rode, AKG, and Calrec. Preamps by: Neve, Phoenix, Decca, Avalon and a PROTOOLS TDM HD2 system and Control24 digital desk with full automation with big Genelec monitors and sub woofer.

        What  We Provide:

Band rehearsal facilities, including ALL BACKLINE (drum kit, Ampeg bass, Marshall valve
stack, Fender combo) and Vocal P.A
At a rate of £20 for 3 hours…..any time from 9.00am till 8.30 pm including weekends.
Recording rates £25 per hour, minimum 3hours, if you book 8 you pay for 7!
And you get to use thousands of pounds worth of pro equipment and an experienced engineer.
Mastering (the final pro stage of mixing) rates vary but usually £180 - £250 per album depending on material. 
We have a long history of mastering, with a provable track record available.
Or you can just rent our rooms, as they are pleasing on the eye, sound proofed and
comfortable.
   

 
 
We have delivered numerous audio projects in the past 25 years, from recording school choirs and duplicating CDs, spoken word recordings, jazz bands, death metal bands, lots of folk music, senior citizens keyboard classes, young children recording for talent contests, transferring old Vinyl records to CD, tapes to CD….guitar lessons, drum workshops, dj skills, computer based recording, working with homeless people, substance abuse groups, you name it we have done it. And if we cant do it, we’ll know someone who does!  We are flexible with money if you cant afford our prices (to a point) and will always try to provide you with what ever you need if we can. And still run entirely by volunteers! The money we earn goes back into the studio, hopefully to continue for another 25 years.
